The ancient theatre is one of the most critical and creative socio-cultural edutainment centres of human history. Many of these impressive structures from classical antiquity still serve the function they were initially designed for and are still used for modern performances, festivals, exhibitions, and events. They stood and served as massive multi-functional structures for social, religious, propaganda, and political meeting spaces. They give proof of a common heritage that can promote mutual understanding and dialogue between cultures. They can also play a considerable role in building a peaceful, democratic, open-minded society and promoting cultural diversity.

Eventually, the theatre becomes a global “symbol of cultural sharing modernity," stimulating competition among cities to possess the most significant theatre building. Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that the theatre case can be classified as a "global localisation" or "global" paradigm.

Theatre architecture’s cultural significance can be defined by four aspects; its survival as an ancient landmark, impressive architecture, acoustic characteristics and qualities, and continuous reuse in modern sociocultural edutainment performances and events.

Considering these four aspects of the cultural significance of these structures, the book is the first on the subject that deals with and discusses the ancient use of theatre cultural significance based on recent multidisciplinary research. It addresses issues, including the risks and opportunities of its contemporary use. It is unique in discussing the issues of ancient theatres and modern use and functions and recommending criteria for compatible use.

Biography

Author(s):  Dr Naif Haddad is a Full Professor, recently serving as Dean of Queen Rania Faculty of Tourism and Heritage, Hashemite University of Jordan and also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design and the Dean of Scientific Research and Graduate Studies at the American University of Madaba. He is a founding member of CulTech for Heritage and Conservation in Jordan. In addition, he serves as a member of the National Committee for the Protection of Architectural and Urban Heritage.
