Description

Trials are among the main ways to deal with crimes against humanity committed in the recent past, and often victims and their testimonies are the main source of evidence. This important new book compares victims’ experiences with trials in Argentina and Peru.

Trials are important to many victims. Trials can give some justice to those who did not survive, place those responsible in jail, confirm what happened, and inform society at large. The commitment and demands of victims have been crucial for the possibility to carry out trials in Argentina and Peru.

Trials are a way of reaching justice, but they are not necessarily healing for victims. Trials present a series of challenges for victims, ranging from having their testimonies questioned in court, to the presence of serious threats. Often, victims take part in several trials.

Whether victims experience trials as justice also depend on the outcome of trials. When trials lead to convictions, it gives a sensation of justice. When trials do not lead to convictions, as is often the case in Peru, it leaves a feeling of continued injustice.
