Description

Corporate violence describes what firms do to others when they provide goods or services that are not in the best interest of their customers, or when they ignore human rights internally in the workplace, or externally in the supply chain. Firms weave beguiling narratives to make sense of their actions and to play down their responsibilities.

Sustainable development and corporate social responsibility play a major role is such narratives. Prompted not least by the climate crisis, a growing body of legislation, particularly at the supranational level of the EU, has attempted to sort out and regulate many of the difficult issues involved. What we see are incremental improvements, albeit at the expense of burdensome bureaucracy, especially for small- and medium-sized companies.

What is proposed in this book is radical change instead of concepts of piecemeal transition. Proceeding from the tenet “what you believe is what you do” and using the metaphor of the ignition engine, the analysis shows how beliefs spark motivation which, in turn, gives rise to action, and how any attempt to bring about radical change must get to the roots and work on the belief mechanism.
