Description
Most artisanal mining activities are illegal, so participants make every effort to keep the workings of the supply chain as obscure as possible. Because supply chains are poorly understood, efforts by the international community to interrupt the illegal artisanal commodity trade often fall short. Illegal traders can always find ways to circumvent any regulatory efforts based on an incomplete understanding of the industry operations.
From this perspective, this study of artisanal coal mining in Afghanistan is unique. It succeeds in comprehensively and verifiably documenting Afghanistan’s artisanal coal supply chain from mine mouth to delivery to the international buyer. Besides documenting the supply chain, this case study addresses the importance of coal mining to the Afghan economy, the impact of coal mining on human and environmental health, the role of coal in supporting the Taliban insurgency and subsequently the Taliban government, and the long-term impact of resource destruction caused by unregulated coal mining to Afghanistan’s future economic development potential.
This case study traces the development of coal mining since its inception in the 1940s to its peak production in 2018, and the impending industry collapse.
