A major problem faced by African scholars is misrepresentation of facts by foreign researchers who patronize African research spaces. Score cards, scales and indices that are used to measure Africa’s progress in development, and in the attainment of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), have been designed from the West, based on assumptions and definition of terms that are not realistic to the lived realities of Africans.

What this means is that what entails poverty in the lens of a western scientist may not necessarily translate to poverty in the African realistic sense. For example, children in most African countries receive high-quality education and health care services, and should Africa harness its governance processes properly, the continent has a chance to convert the current youth bulge into the viable and influential demographic dividend that is required for the development of the continent towards the goals of Agenda 2063 – The Africa We Want.

Producing knowledge and indicators that are realistic to the African continent, and that can contribute to the enhancement of the SDGs agenda here, is best done by African scholars with lived experiences of a day-to-day Africa reality, and who can use these experiences to theorise realistic methods for translating the SDG dream to reality.
