Description

The White Rose was a student-led resistance movement, active in Nazi Germany in 1942 and 1943, which encouraged Germans to reject Nazi ideology. They wrote and distributed leaflets calling on Germans to act against genocide. Three of the group’s leaders were arrested, then executed by the Gestapo in February 1943.

The aim of the book is to trace the spirit of the White Rose resistance through their leaflets, which include rich ethical and political ideas, notwithstanding their conciseness: six leaflets, each no longer than one or two pages. The book also attempts to highlight the philosophical and ethical aspects of this great enterprise of resistance and freedom, and what this commitment suggests for our times, still prey to conflict and authoritarianism.

Although many books have been published on the White Rose, most of them are devoted to historical monographs, biographies, testimonials and novels. This book attempts to present the philosophy inherent in this resistance group, made possible by the intellectualism of its members and the eminent status of their mentor, Dr Kurt Huber, a professor of philosophy. The questions of resistance, freedom, tyranny, war, dignity and humanity remain as burning issues today.
