Description

This book examines the importance of meeting the social and emotional needs of students in public education at the secondary school level. Student expectations increase when students leave the elementary school setting. They are expected to be able to engage in more routine, higher level tasks. Not every student comes equipped with the ability to understand all of the aspects and adaptations that come not only with changing buildings, but with higher expectations. Students who are identified as economically disadvantaged, or at risk, may need additional supports built into their school structure to help them be successful and adapt to the changes they are experiencing.

No one should have to walk into a new environment and be expected to know all the rules and appropriate behaviours. But students entering into secondary schools across the country are expected to do exactly that. A student with no understanding or appropriate coping skills for new situations can easily find themselves experiencing events that result in the loss of class time, loss of learning and can lead to a perpetuation of disciplinary actions.

Understanding how to reach students who have already been labelled as disadvantaged, and giving them the skills and opportunities to practice appropriate behaviours, can help turn students around. Educators need to help students not only learn their required curriculum, but also to help them learn how to navigate through unfamiliar environments, including appropriate responses.

This book uses a particular US school district which brought in social emotional learning into the secondary setting, as a case study.

Biography

Editor(s):  Dr. Coralynne Carson has over 20 years of educational experience, with most of her experience in Title 1 schools. Her focus has been on Title 1 schools. Her doctoral research examined a Social-Emotional Learning program and its impact on secondary students’ exclusionary disciplinary assignments within a Title 1 district.
