Description
This book explores blue carbon—the carbon stored in coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes—and its pivotal role in mitigating climate change. Moving beyond technical definitions, it presents blue carbon as both a scientific concept and a catalyst for systemic change in how we value, govern, and protect coastal environments. Through an interdisciplinary lens, the book integrates science, policy, and education to illuminate how blue carbon can drive transformative coastal action. It examines the ecological functions and socioeconomic benefits of coastal ecosystems; while critically addressing the threats they face from urbanization, pollution, and climate change. What sets this work apart is its focus on actionable pathways: from conservation and restoration strategies to educational practices and inclusive policies that empower local communities. The book emphasizes that protecting blue carbon ecosystems is not just an environmental necessity but a sociopolitical opportunity—requiring collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and scales.
Drawing on global case studies, real-world examples, and emerging innovations, this book is both a knowledge resource and a call to action. It challenges readers to rethink coastal sustainability not as a fixed goal, but as a dynamic process of co-creation, resilience-building, and long-term stewardship.
