Description
Climate change has its roots in emissions, but the impact is largely felt through water-related disasters which have caused fatalities, affected economies, led to loss of livelihood, and created poverty, food insecurity, biodiversity, distress migration and conflict. These disasters include drought, flood, water pollution, storms, and cyclones. There is ample evidence that climate change is fanning this ‘disaster fire’, in scale, duration and intensity. This is translating into a food crises, abandonment of and fleeing from own lands and migration and increased tensions and insecurity. Women, girls and children are disproportionately affected.
The challenges are global, solutions are local. This book combines literature reviews around the state of water resources, impact of climate change on water resources, biodiversity and food security, and the impact of disasters and climate change on women and children, with findings from field work. It primarily documents the work of villagers of the Chambal region of Rajasthan, India, who were able to change their destiny through water conservation and convincingly demonstrate climate resilience.
