Description
How do we construct compelling explanations in the study of international relations? Explanation and Reasoning in International Theory offers a vital examination of the philosophical foundations and methodological principles that underpin political science's most influential theories. The book examines the nature of explanation and argumentation, providing readers with the essential conceptual toolkit to critically evaluate the logical coherence and empirical validity of complex theoretical claims.
The book first establishes a clear framework for understanding different modes of explanation and the structure of sound arguments. It then applies this framework to deconstruct and analyze the core assumptions and causal logics of the three major paradigms in the field: Realism, Liberalism, and Constructivism. By bridging the gap between abstract philosophy of science and the concrete practice of international relations scholarship, the work is an indispensable resource for students and researchers seeking a deeper, more rigorous understanding of how we know what we claim to know about world politics.
