Description

Praying with Jesus, Not to Jesus: Martin Buber in Dialogue with Christianity explores the profound and devoted engagement between Martin Buber’s dialogical philosophy and the Christian faith. While remaining rooted in his distinct, non-orthodox interpretation of Judaism, Buber engaged deeply with Christian theology. This book offers a comprehensive and nuanced study of Buber’s understanding of Jesus—his faith, words, and deeds—as well as the theological developments that followed. Rather than entering into conventional theological disputations, Buber provided philosophical depth and dialogical insight into core Christian beliefs. Buber’s dialogical and Judaic perspectives approach Christianity with both reverence and critique.

At a time when both Judaism and Christianity face crises of faith, characterized by declining religious participation, institutional disillusionment, and spiritual uncertainty, Buber’s thought provides a unique opening for meditation and insight. His philosophy calls both traditions to transcend theology, rigid dogma and institutional formalism in favor of a renewed, living faith rooted in authentic encounter: between person and person, and between humanity and the natural world.

Through a comparative lens, Praying with Jesus, Not to Jesus places Buber in dialogue with foundational Christian thinkers and examines his enduring impact on Christian-Jewish relations. While other studies have touched on these themes, this work offers a unique in-depth exploration of the life-long relationship between Buber and Christianity.

This book is designed for scholars and students of Theology and Philosophy, Christian Theologians and Jewish scholars, Clergy, Interfaith Thinkers and Practitioners, progressive and post-denominational Jews. It speaks to both academic and spiritually engaged audiences, bridging the gap between intellectual rigor and personal faith practices.
