Description
In this provocative and timely monograph, Professor Donald Dutton challenges the dominant 'gender paradigm' that has shaped both public perception and academic discourse on domestic violence for decades. Drawing on a comprehensive review of empirical studies, this book challenges the widely held stereotype of intimate partner violence as an issue of male perpetrators and female victims. The author presents data indicating that violence is frequently bilateral, often initiated by females, and that the prevailing model fits only a small fraction of cases. The book critically examines how research from biased samples, such as women’s shelters, has been erroneously generalized, leading to a one-sided and fundamentally flawed understanding within the social sciences. Tracing the historical development of domestic violence intervention, 'The Gender Paradigm' argues that this skewed perspective constitutes a form of academic misandry. It offers an essential, evidence-based re-evaluation for researchers, clinicians, legal professionals, and policymakers, advocating for a new framework focused on data, interactive patterns, and conflict resolution.
