Description
The eighteenth century presented the Spanish state with profound geopolitical and socioeconomic challenges that tested its capacity to act and endure. While many historical accounts examine these pressures in isolation, this monograph offers a vital, integrated analysis. It argues that the performance of the state can only be fully understood by simultaneously considering its international actions and its domestic strategies for economic and social progress. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book freviews the fiscal, demographic, and political factors that shaped Spanish power, then examines how this capacity was deployed to face armed conflicts, manage a vast empire, and engage with the Enlightenment’s new ideas of progress. By weaving together military expenditure with public investment and geopolitical strategy with social policy, this work provides a nuanced and comprehensive assessment of the Spanish state's successes and failures. It is an indispensable resource for scholars and students of early modern European history, economic history, and the development of the modern state.
