With the advent of Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, it is increasingly difficult to trust that the author on the front page is the sole creator of what is being read. With professional language services and powerful AI, writing has evolved from a solitary, human act to a collaborative practice between person and computer intelligence, raising questions about what is real, and what is ethical. This is particularly marked in academic circles, where the essay or assignment is a test of the author’s comprehension and learning.
This book explores the issues of authenticity and ethics in academic text production and publishing in the twenty-first century, as new ways of textual engagement and mediation compel us to revisit some of our current ways of working.
Born and educated in China, the author has witnessed the dramatic growth and change in China’s academy over the last decade, and has been deeply involved in the country’s burgeoning academic enterprise as a student-cum-author’s service provider. From a locally informed perspective, the book draws on evidence from discourse analysis, text-oriented ethnographies, interviews, and observations to discuss the value of authenticity in reconsidering power relations in global knowledge production and authors’ decisions and behaviours. It proposes ways to encourage ethical participation, and help engage disadvantaged multilingual authors in local and international communities for more sustainable healthy development.
