Description
This book tells the story of the WWII Japanese General Masaharu Homma; charged with committing War Crimes; convicted of these crimes, and executed by a U.S. Military firing squad on 3 April 1946. His main accuser was the U.S. Supreme Military Commander, General Douglas MacArthur.
In April 1942, General MacArthur’s forces surrendered to General Homma. The accepted number of surrendering US troops is 70-80 thousand, of whom 10,000 perished in a forced 100-kilometre walk. This became known as the Battan Death March.
Macarthur returned to the Philippines in 1944 with a large army, and eventually retook the Philippines in September 1945. This signalled the end of the War in the Pacific.
Meanwhile, General Homma returned to Japan and spent the remainder of the War in the Pacific living with his family. After the Japanese surrender, Macarthur had General Homma arrested and charged with 48 counts of War Crimes. He was convicted of 46 and sentenced to death by a firing squad.
The author argues that Homma’s War Crimes convictions may have been unjust.
