Description
This book explores the lived experiences, family dynamics, and identity formations of Chinese immigrant families in Japan, with a particular focus on childhood. As Japan transitions—albeit cautiously—toward a more multicultural society amidst demographic decline, Chinese families have emerged as one of the largest and most complex immigrant groups.
Chinese immigrant families in Japan have been largely overlooked compared to Brazilian Nikkeijin, Vietnamese technical trainees, or Southeast Asian marriage migrants. There is very limited scholarship on immigrant children’s experiences within Japanese schools, social networks, and identity formation processes—especially those of Chinese origin.
Through in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, and policy analysis, this study examines how migration reshapes not only adult economic trajectories but also the childhoods of immigrant children—children who must navigate linguistic barriers, educational systems, racialized perceptions, and intergenerational tensions. While migration studies in Japan have typically focused on labor migrants or foreign brides, this book fills a critical gap by addressing the family as a unit and centering children’s voices and experiences.
