Description

This book is for anyone who is interested in the nature of science, the ethical conduct of science and how to overcome the difficulties in making the benefits of science more equitable. It combines a unique 360 degree view of exclusion and participation in science, both from a theoretical perspective and in practice. Specifically, it looks at the wider issues identified in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion and its specific enactment within the context of science.

Focusing on the gap that currently exists between the aspirations and the reality of the science community, the book provides an account of the ways in which science has systematically excluded people with diverse characteristics. Whilst much effort is now being put into re-diversifying the science community, the author asks the fundamental question - why were they not there all along? It adopts a critical theory perspective on how science came to be so normative and elitist.
Although there is now much evidence on the extent to which various identifiable groups who have not been accorded equitable access to the opportunities in science, the work seeks to understand the process of exclusion using a common analytical framework. The author presents exclusionary practices as a sustained endeavour to retain power, including scientific knowledge and the means of its creation, in the hands of the few.

Drawing upon its analysis of the roots of systemic discrimination, How the Rainbow Ended enables readers to challenge the many assumptions that underpin the normative culture of science. It also looks at what can be done at a practical level to reintroduce diverse perspectives into the discipline of science. Ultimately, it seeks to make the re-diversification of science a rational and evidence-informed decision.
