Description

The focus of this book is on two main types of value experience: aesthetic experience, and moral experience. The analysis of these types of human experience is preceded by a discussion of the method employed in the examination of the essential structure of aesthetic value. This value exists as a schema in the mind of the artist - idea, feeling, experience, vision - in the process of artistic creation and comes to life in the mind of the aesthetic perceiver as an aesthetic object in the aesthetic experiences. Secondly, it exists in the mind of the moral agent as a schema - rule, principle, norm - and translated into a particular moral judgment in the process of moral deliberation.

The author argues that “the artistic” and the “aesthetic” are real objects of reflection or experience. The first exists as a potentiality in the formal organization of the representation the artist creates, and the second exists as an aesthetic object constructed in the mind by the aesthetic perceiver. Aesthetic theory should address four central questions: What is the artistic? What is the aesthetic? How do we ground the aesthetic judgment? What is the role of art in human life and civilization?
