Description
The devastating consequences unleashed by two world wars in the twentieth century gave rise to both movements and individuals seeking an alternative to the nationalism that helped propel these conflicts. In the aftermath of the Second World War, which resulted in nearly seventy million deaths, a number of prominent people promoted transcending the nation state by endorsing either world government or world citizenship. This study of eight individuals focuses on what propelled them to embrace, either explicitly or implicitly, world citizenship, and the degree to which their articulation of such citizenship represented significant philosophical and political strands in the creation of an alternative to nationalism. Locating the milieu out of which each person emerged helps identify the social and historical circumstances that not only led them to their position but also how that stance resonated with the times and various political movements.
An important and unusual reference book for researchers in Peace & Conflict Studies, Peace and Justice Studies, World History and other academic subjects.
