Description

This book was originally conceived for carers of children with severe epilepsy, intending to explain these diseases to them, and how to cope with them. As it grew and developed, it became a resource for physicians, healthcare professionals and researchers, as well as caregivers.

Observing age-related epilepsy contributes to understanding brain development, and vice versa, because brain maturation is a major player in determining symptoms according to the age of onset. This means that normal brain development needed to be explained and how each type of epilepsy is related to a certain age range that determines the symptoms, including comorbidity. How these various diseases were progressively discovered is also given.

The book describes the context in which these diseases were progressively discovered and understood, starting from the early 1970s, to date. Neurobiology data are included whenever necessary. There are only a very few books dedicated to age-related epilepsies and their comorbidities, and really none accessible to a non-medical specialist audience

Biography

Author(s):  Professor Olivier Dulac was a paediatrician, then a paediatric neurologist dedicated to epilepsy in children, particularly those conditions which affect cognition and behaviour. Now retired, he was based at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital and Paris-Descartes University, France
