Description

These are challenging times for science and scientists. The scientific community has been insufficiently attentive to the need to communicate science to the public and to engage the public in priority-setting about science that directly affects them. On the other hand, no other community has members who so constantly critique, correct, challenge, and police one another, creating a unique, though not perfect, internal opposition to and correction system for whatever flawed information science generates. This, too, the science community has failed to convey adequately to the public. The communication void has enabled anti-science forces to successfully undermine the public's trust in and regard for science and scientists.

*How Science Does (and Does Not) Work* offers an important intervention. It provides a proactive and accessible guide to the inner workings of the scientific enterprise, demystifying everything from hypothesis design to the rigorous ethical oversight that underpins all credible research. The author, a highly experienced academic researcher and science professional, argues that rebuilding trust requires a two-way effort, offering actionable guidelines for scientists, educators, policymakers, and the public alike.
