Description
Luis Buñuel and the Poetics of Cinema addresses the film-maker’s context and influences, drawing from Bunuel’s background in Spain and Mexico, and his influences from the surrealist arts movement of 1920s Paris. It deals with some of his characteristic themes including the unconscious, erotica, subversion, symbolism and his use of music and silence. It reviews his almost 50-year career in film-making, from his controversial short feature with Salvador Dali, Un Chien Anadolu in the late 1920s, to his later films in the 1970s including The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire.
The author also addresses Bunuel’s influence and legacy. Although one of cinema’s most notable and important pioneers, Bunuel’s life, creative process and filmography are not particularly well-documented, so this will be an important addition to collections in film studies and the creative arts.
