Description

This monograph offers a uniquely comprehensive and integrated critique of the European Monetary Union's (EMU) foundational architecture. The author argues that the EMU's institutional design, deeply rooted in the economic theories of the 1970s, has systematically generated macroeconomic imbalances, hindered growth, and increased vulnerability to financial crises. By tracing the theoretical and political origins of the EMU's core tenets—from central bank independence to fiscal constraints—the book exposes the sources of its persistent asymmetries. It proposes a holistic redesign for a more democratic and resilient EMU. This forward-looking agenda outlines a coordinated strategy that integrates monetary, macro-prudential, fiscal, industrial, and social policies to foster sustainable growth and financial stability. It is essential reading for academics, postgraduate students, and policymakers in the fields of political economy, European integration, and monetary and economic policy.
