The construction sector is one of the largest consumers of raw materials and producers of waste globally, yet the transition from a linear to a circular model remains slow and fragmented. This book examines how the built environment can be redesigned, from the initial concept through to end-of-life, to support resource recovery, material reuse, and waste reduction. Drawing on original research conducted at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) and the research institute alchemia-nova, it investigates temporary and pop-up architectural environments as a testing ground for circular strategies, exploring how buildings designed from the outset for deconstruction can contribute to a more sustainable construction sector. Through case studies, methodological frameworks, and policy analysis, the book proposes practical principles applicable across construction systems and building types, offering a research-grounded yet accessible contribution to one of the most urgent challenges of our time.

Author(s):  Gaetano Bertino is a Senior Project Manager and Circular Construction expert. Doctor in Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Dr.nat.techn.), Post-Master’s Specialization in Forensic Engineering, licensed Civil Engineer and Architect (MSc.), with dual professional qualification.
