This new history of capitalist thought examines the period of British history preceding 1820 in the context of six revolutions, each of which began in eighteenth or later seventeenth-century Britain. These revolutions are described as philosophical, industrial, financial, agricultural, urban - the formation of an urban labor base, and mercantile - the emergence of Britain’s international hegemony in cotton textile production and export. These revolutions precede the year-on-year increase in British GDP per capita beginning circa 1820. Increasing yearly per capita output is the defining feature of mature capitalism, originating in Britain in this period. It is the thesis of this book that these six British revolutions were the genesis of modern capitalism. They illustrate the momentous changes in the period, which led to unparalleled British economic preeminence.
