Description
The Limits of the Citizen explores citizenship as a form of human existence within a political community. It examines how citizens become both subjects and bearers of political power, and why constitutionalism must address both the limitation of state power and the limits of human power.
Drawing on political philosophy, constitutional law, theories of representation, human rights, migration, and European citizenship, the book follows the citizen from the ancient polis to contemporary forms of political belonging. It explores the dangers of political representation becoming detached from the person, the tension between citizenship and human personhood, the experience of the stranger and the person without a place, and the possibilities of solidarity beyond political boundaries. Ultimately, the book proposes an ethos of citizenship grounded in participation, responsibility, self-restraint, recognition of the other, and the preservation of the human person within political life.
